Medical costs & travel insurance

What visitors pay, and how insurance works in Japan.

  1. 1Visitors pay the full cost of treatment — Japan’s public health insurance doesn’t cover tourists.
  2. 2Travel insurance can be bought even after you arrive in Japan.
  3. 3Keep your receipt (領収書 ryōshūsho) and ask for a medical certificate (診断書 shindansho) for your insurer.
  4. 4Some clinics accept cash only — check before you go.

About costs

  • JNTO’s examples of treatment costs: pneumothorax after a bicycle accident ¥7.5 million, heart attack ¥10 million.
  • Unpaid medical bills can affect future entry to Japan.
